With 580 cancer cases in Torfaen a year, Nick Thomas-Symonds MP visited the Cancer Research UK shop in Cwmbran to meet the dedicated staff and volunteers who help make the charity’s life-saving work possible.
During the visit, the Torfaen MP spent time with the team finding out about the
generosity of the tireless volunteers who contribute their time to help raise funds for
research into over 200 types of cancer.
Commenting on the experience, Nick Thomas-Symonds said: “It was inspiring to
see the essential contribution that volunteers in our community are making in the fight against this devastating disease that affects so many in Torfaen. Without their commitment, the Cancer Research UK shop in Cwmbran would not be able to function.
“Volunteering is a great opportunity to give something back to an important cause. Nearly 1 in 2 people in the UK will get cancer in their lifetime But all of us can support the research that will beat it. As little as two hours per week could make a huge difference to the scientists making this a reality.”
In the last 50 years, Cancer Research UK’s pioneering work has helped double
cancer survival in the UK.

grateful to Nick Thomas-Symonds for his support.
“Collectively, our shops raise millions of pounds each year to help drive forward new
discoveries and cancer breakthroughs. Our volunteers are the reason we can run our shops and raise this crucial income -but we need more people to help continue this vital work.
“We would love to hear from anyone who can spare a couple of hours per week. Any contribution will help bring us closer to achieving our vision of a world where everybody lives longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer.”
