Rt Hon Nick Thomas-Symonds MP, Member of Parliament for Torfaen, spoke to people with sight loss about the problems caused by pavement parking and inaccessible streets at the Guide Dogs’ exhibition stand at Labour Conference.
Cars parked on pavements are a problem for everyone, but are particularly dangerous for people with sight loss, who can be forced to walk in the road with traffic they cannot see. According to Guide Dogs’ research, 95% of people with sight loss have been forced to walk in the road because of cars parked on pavements.
Guide Dogs is campaigning to ensure that everyone can walk their streets safely and spoke to the Torfaen MP on the impact of pavement parking in the community.
At the conference, Nick spoke to Guide Dog Owner, Scott, about their experience of pavement parking.
Nick Thomas-Symonds MP said: “It was great to meet Guide Dogs volunteer Scott and his guide dog Ribbon at Labour Party Conference this year.
Thank you to constituents who contacted me about the Guide Dogs’ campaign on pavement parking. I’m pleased I could express their views and concerns to the Guide Dogs team as the local MP.
I know it is an important issue for lots of people in Torfaen, so it was important to speak to Scott to listen to his experience, and how we can make our streets safer and more accessible.”
