Torfaen MP joins Alzheimer’s Society UK to welcome Torfaen Dementia Hub

Nick Thomas-Symonds MP joined UK charity Alzheimer’s Society at the new Torfaen Dementia Hub which was established in February this year.

The Torfaen Dementia Hub – which is open from 10am to 2pm every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at Cwmbran Library – provides a local space where people living with dementia and their carers can access advice, support and connections to services.

It offers information and guidance, support from trained dementia advisers, activities that reduce isolation, and links to health, social care and community services.

Anyone concerned about their memory or with questions about dementia can also make use of the service.

During the visit the Torfaen MP was introduced to the activities at the Hub, discussed with staff how the Hub is supporting residents and the challenges facing services that support people with dementia.

Services like this help people remain independent in their communities while reducing pressure on hospital services. The hub is one of five dementia hubs opened across Gwent in 2024, with support from the Gwent Regional Partnership Board, bringing together local organisations to support people affected by dementia. It is open not only to those living with dementia and their carers, but also anyone concerned about their memory or seeking advice about dementia.

Nick Thomas-Symonds MP said: “The Torfaen Dementia Hub is an incredible asset to have that will provide much needed support for people affected by dementia and their loved ones.

It was great to have the opportunity to see first-hand the services and activities that are in place to support people affected by dementia.

Thank you to all the organisations who worked in partnership to establish this vital support which I know will be valued by people across Torfaen.”

Alzheimer’s Society’s National Influencing Manager for Wales, Gemma Roberts, said: “We were delighted to welcome Nick to the Torfaen Dementia Hub to show him how partnership‑led support can help people navigate their dementia journey. Community‑based provision like dementia hubs help people affected by dementia to remain independent, support unpaid carers, and reduce hospital admissions

“Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer. Around 51,000 people are living with dementia in Wales, rising to around 70,000 by 2040. Yet only 56% of people living with dementia in Wales have a diagnosis, meaning thousands are missing out on the vital care, support and treatment that a diagnosis can bring.

“We have a huge opportunity in Wales with the 10-year Dementia Strategy and in England with the Modern Service Framework for Dementia and Frailty on their way. These are once-in-a-generation opportunities to transform the lives of people living with dementia and their carers.”
